You must first make the necessary change to either the Mail app on Mac or the Default App Setting in Windows 10

How to make Gmail Default Email: macOS
- On your MacBook, do a search for the mail app (which is the pre-installed default email app for Apple)
Click on the Mail icon to open it
- Go to the top left corner of your screen
Click Mail
Click Preferences
- Be sure you are on the General tab
- You will see the screen shown below and the only thing we are going to change is the Default email reader
Click the drop-down
- You will be taken to the list of all of the Applications that are installed on your MacBook
Locate and click on Google Chrome .app
Click Select
- You will be back on the General tab
- The Default email reader will now show as Google Chrome .app
How to make Gmail Default Email: Windows 10
Go to Settings
Click Apps
Click Default apps tab
Click to choose Email
Set the browser to Google Chrome
Then adjust the settings in your browser to open mailto links in Gmail by default

Whether you're using a Mac or Windows machine, you will also need to follow the steps below

Make Gmail the default email program when you click email links in Chrome Browser
Open the Google Chrome Browser and click More Settings
Go to the Privacy and security section
Next to Site Settings, click the Right arrow
Scroll down to Additional permissions and click to Expand
Next to Protocol handlers, click the Right arrow
Be sure the option for: Sites can ask to handle protocols is selected
Note: Scroll down to the Blocked section and make sure that mail.google.com doesn't appear in this list
In your Chrome Browser's address bar, enter mail.google.com
Click Service handler
Click Allow
Click Done
