AI Role Play lets your reps rehearse a real conversation out loud with an AI buyer, inside a Learning Path. This article covers getting a role play created. Shaping the persona, the scoring and the settings is covered in the next article.
ℹ️ Role plays are always created inside a Learning Path. There is no separate role play library, and a role play cannot be added to a Spek.
1. Before you begin
Check these 3 things first. Each one can stop you partway through.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Who can create role plays | Admins and Experts. To edit an existing role play you also need permission to edit its Learning Path |
| Availability | AI Role Play must be enabled for your organization. If you do not see Create a Role Play, or it is greyed out, contact your Customer Success Manager or email support@spekit.co |
| Credits | Creating, editing or practicing a role play uses 1 credit per person per calendar month. Check Settings to see how many credits you have available. |
2. Plan your scenario first
A few minutes of planning makes a large difference to what the AI produces. Decide 2 things before you start.
| Decision | Example |
|---|---|
| The scenario | Who is the buyer, and what moment are reps practicing? "A first discovery call with a VP of Revenue Operations who attended our webinar" |
| What good sounds like | The 2 or 3 things a rep must do to pass. "Ask how the forecast is built today, quantify the cost of the current process, agree a next step" |
💡 Pro Tip: A role play that covers discovery, the pitch, objections and the close produces a score nobody can act on. Pick 1 conversation at 1 point in the deal.
3. Add a role play to your Learning Path
- Open the Learning Path you want to add the role play to. To make a new one, use the Create menu and select Create a Learning Path.
- Go to the Content tab.
- If the path is empty, click Start creating your Learning Path. If it already has content, click Add at the top of the content list.
- Select Create a Role Play.
4. Choose the context for the AI
The Set up your Role Play screen controls which Spekit content the AI can draw on.
- Under Included automatically, review the Speks and files already in this Learning Path. They are all selected by default. Uncheck anything not relevant to this scenario.
- Under Add other Spekit content, search for any other Speks or files to include, such as a product overview, a battle card or a call playbook. You can add up to 50 items.
- Click Open the Role Play studio.
| Good to know | Detail |
|---|---|
| What can be used as context | Speks and files only. Videos, images and Topics cannot be added here |
| Files on your desktop | Upload them in the next step, inside the studio |
| Is context required? | No. You can skip it and describe the scenario to the AI instead |
💡 Pro Tip: Uncheck anything in the path that is not about this conversation. A role play built from 8 loosely related Speks produces a vaguer buyer than one built from the 3 that matter.
⚠️ Context is only used to build the role play. The AI does not use it to score reps, and updating a Spek later does not update an existing role play.
5. Generate the role play
The studio opens in a full screen window. You have 2 ways to produce the first draft.
| Option | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Co-Create With AI | You want to describe the scenario and refine it through conversation. Best for most role plays |
| Auto-Generate Role-Play | You want the AI to build a first draft straight from your content with no conversation |
| Upload files | You have material that is not in Spekit. Add it before generating |
When you co-create, describe the situation, who the buyer is, what they care about, the objections they will raise, and what the rep should achieve. Answer the AI's questions, then keep refining until the scenario matches what you want.
| Weak instruction | Better instruction |
|---|---|
| Create a role play using these files | Use the Competitor X battle card to add 2 objections about their new feature to the buyer's concerns |
| Make it harder | The buyer should only share numbers after the trainee gives a specific example of the problem |
💡 Pro Tip: Describe the buyer's situation and mood, not just their job title. "A Director of Operations who has been burned by 2 failed rollouts" produces a far better conversation than "a Director of Operations".
| File limits | Detail |
|---|---|
| How many | Up to 20 files per session. Only the first 20 are processed, with no warning |
| Size | 200MB each |
| Supported | PDF, DOCX, PPTX, TXT, MD, CSV, MP4, MP3, WAV, WEBM |
| Not supported | Excel (XLSX) |
| Links | A pasted URL must open without a login |
⚠️ Once you move from the AI Assistant to the editor you cannot go back to it, and your uploaded sources do not carry over. Make sure you are happy with the generated scenario first. You can still change anything in the editor by hand or with Edit with AI.
6. Templates
Instead of generating from scratch, you can start from a template.
| Template | What it does |
|---|---|
| Single-Persona Role-Play [AI Assistant] | A one-on-one spoken conversation with 1 AI buyer. The right choice for most scenarios |
| Multi-Persona Role-Play | 2 to 4 AI buyers in the same conversation, such as a champion, an economic buyer and a technical buyer. English only, and no video avatars |
| Chat Role-Play | A written conversation instead of a spoken one. Useful for chat or written support practice |
| Single-Persona with User-Generated Role-Play | You build the framework, and each rep personalizes it before starting with their own company, prospect and competitor. Any field you fill in is locked for them |
| Scripted Role-Play | The rep follows a predefined script. Used where exact wording matters |
A wider library of prebuilt templates also appears under Available Templates, filtered by conversation type, topic and language.
ℹ️ The templates available vary by organization. If you cannot find a template you expect, contact Spekit Support.
⚠️ Many templates in the wider library predate the AI Assistant and are kept so older role plays keep working. For a new role play, start from 1 of the 5 above.
7. What happens next
The AI produces a draft and opens it in the editor. Everything it generated can be changed.
Go to [Admin Guide] Build your persona, topics and scoring to review the draft, set how reps are scored, and publish.
