[Admin & Rep Guide] Connect Spekit to Gemini CLI

Add Spekit as an MCP server in Gemini CLI so you can search, cite, and create Spekit content from your terminal. This is a developer-tool connection. You edit a settings file instead of using a settings screen.

ℹ️ The sign-in step opens a real browser window. It will not work over a remote SSH session or in a headless environment without local browser access.

1. What you can do in Gemini CLI

Once the server is connected, Gemini CLI can reach the same Spekit content you can reach in the web app.

From the terminal you canExample
Search your Spekit libraryAsk for the approved answer on a product question.
List Topics and the Speks under themExplore a Topic tree without opening the web app.
Pull a full Spek and its Topic assignmentsRead source content while you work.
Draft content against your content style guideGenerate a Spek body that follows Spekit's design system rules.
Create Speks, Topics, Companies, and Deal RoomsFile the result straight into Spekit.

💡 Pro Tip: This setup is useful when you are already scripting or working in a terminal and do not want to switch to a browser to look something up.

2. Who can use this

You need Gemini CLI installed, a terminal, and an active Spekit account. Gemini CLI's OAuth flow signs you in through your existing Spekit login in a browser window.

3. Add the server to your settings

Add an entry to ~/.gemini/settings.json for a global connection, or to .gemini/settings.json in your project directory for a project-only connection:

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "spekit": {
      "url": "https://mcp.spekit.co/mcp",
      "oauth": { "enabled": true }
    }
  }
}

4. Authenticate

In Gemini CLI, run:

/mcp auth spekit

This opens a browser window. Sign in with your Spekit credentials.

5. Confirm it is connected

Run /mcp auth with no arguments. This lists your servers. Spekit should show as authenticated.

If this happensTry this
The server is not listedCheck the settings file path and that the JSON is valid.
The browser window never opensYou are likely in a headless or SSH session. Run the auth step on a machine with a local browser.
Create requests failCheck your Spekit role. A viewer-only user can read but not write.
