[Admin Guide] Setting up Custom Attributes for Dynamic Teams

Use your own identity provider fields in Dynamic Teams rules by mapping them to custom attributes in Spekit. Dynamic Teams works out of the box with a set of default attributes, and it also supports custom attributes when you need to build rules on a field specific to your organization. This guide covers the difference between default and custom attributes, and how the custom attribute setup works.

ℹ️ Who this is for: Account Admins who want to build Dynamic Teams rules on a field that is not in the default attribute list. To build the rules themselves, see Using Dynamic Teams.

1. Default vs custom attributes

Spekit supports two kinds of attributes in Dynamic Teams rules.

Attribute type What it is Setup needed
Default attributes A set of common attributes that come pre-mapped from your identity provider. None. They appear in the rule dropdown automatically.
Custom attributes A field specific to your organization that is not in the default set. Spekit defines the attribute in our system, and you map your IdP field to it.

Most teams can build their rules from the default attributes with no setup at all. Reach for a custom attribute only when the field you need to build a rule on is not already available.

2. How custom attribute setup works

Setting up a custom attribute is a coordinated workflow between Spekit and your team.

  1. Spekit defines the custom attribute in our system. This is what will appear as a selectable attribute in your Dynamic Teams rule dropdown.
  2. You map your identity provider field to that custom attribute on your side, so Spekit knows which field from your system feeds it.

This setup is facilitated by the Spekit customer support team, so start by reaching out to support to request a custom attribute.

💡 Pro tip: Before you contact support, know exactly which field in your identity provider you want to use and what it is called on your side. Naming the source field up front makes the mapping quick and avoids a round of back and forth.

3. Using the attribute in a rule

Once the custom attribute is defined and mapped, it appears in the attribute dropdown on the create or edit team screen, right alongside the default attributes. From there you build rules with it exactly like any other attribute. See Using Dynamic Teams.
