You can draft a Spek in your AI conversation and file it straight into Spekit, with no copy and paste. The connector can also create Topics, create content from your company's templates, and update Speks you already have.
ℹ️ Write tools run as you. If your Spekit role does not let you create or change content in the web app, it will not let you do it through an AI tool either.
1. Before you start
You need the Spekit connector set up in your AI tool, and a Spekit role that allows content creation.
Your AI tool's plan can also limit this. On ChatGPT, write tools are limited to Business, Enterprise, and Education. See Connect Spekit to ChatGPT.
ℹ️ Anything you create through the connector is live Spekit content, filed under your name. Review it before your team starts using it.
2. Draft against your style guide
Spekit has a content style guide that holds your design system rules for authoring. Ask your AI tool to pull it before it drafts, so the result matches the rest of your library instead of looking like generic AI output.
A good pattern is: pull the style guide, pull an existing Spek on a related subject, then draft the new one. The existing Spek shows the tone, the style guide shows the rules.
💡 Pro Tip: Drafting and creating are separate steps. Ask for the draft first, read it, then ask your AI tool to create it. That gives you a review point before anything lands in Spekit.
3. Create a Spek
Ask your AI tool to create the content, and tell it which Topic or Topics to file it under. A Spek can sit under more than one Topic.
What to include in your request:
| Include | Why |
|---|---|
| The title | Otherwise the AI tool picks one for you. |
| The Topic or Topics | A Spek with no Topic is hard for your team to find. |
| The body, or the draft to use | Point at the draft already in your conversation. |
4. Create a Spek from a template
If your company uses content templates, you can start from one instead of a blank draft.
- Ask your AI tool to list the content templates available to your company.
- Ask for the template you want. It returns the template body and its fill instructions.
- Ask your AI tool to create a new Spek from that template, with your details filled in.
Templates are the better route for recurring content types, since the structure is already agreed by your team.
5. Create a Topic
You can create a Topic on its own, or as a subtopic of a Topic you already have.
Say where it belongs in your request. A Topic created without a parent sits at the top level, which is rarely what you want for a narrow subject.
💡 Pro Tip: Check the existing Topic tree first. Ask your AI tool to list your Topics before you create a new one, so you do not end up with two Topics covering the same ground.
6. Update an existing Spek
The update tool changes a Spek you already have. You can change:
| What you can update | Note |
|---|---|
| The title | The old title stops being searchable, so tell your team. |
| The body | Replaces the current content. |
| Topic assignment | Changes where the Spek is filed. |
Pull the current Spek first so you can see what you are replacing. Updating is not a suggestion, it changes the live content.
7. Build a set of content in one request
One request can run several steps in order. For example, a launch content set can read your approved messaging, then draft and create each piece in turn, from that one request.
This is useful when the pieces depend on each other, such as a positioning Spek that the objection handling Speks then reference.
The tradeoff is review. A single request that creates 6 Speks gives you 1 review point instead of 6. For a launch where the wording matters, ask for the full set as a draft first, then create.
8. Best practices
| Practice | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Pull the style guide before drafting | Keeps new content consistent with the rest of your library. |
| Draft, review, then create | Gives you a checkpoint before anything goes live. |
| Always name the Topic | Content with no Topic is hard for your team to find later. |
| Read the current Spek before updating it | Updates replace content. There is no suggestion step. |
| Tell your team when you rename a Spek | People search for the old title. |
